• The Ghana Surgical Research Society Meeting was held at the Nim Avenue Hotel in Tamale on August 12, 2023 under the theme “The Persistent Nemesis in Modern Surgery”, and hosted by the UDS Medical School.

The meeting brought together Surgeons, Non-Surgicak Specialists, Anaesthesiologists, Anaesthetics, Peri-Operative Nurses, Doctors and Administrators from the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Northern Regional Hospital, SDA Hospital, Savelugu Hospital, Tamale Technical University Hospital, Malshegu Health Center among others.

The Dean of the UDS Medical School, Prof. Stephen Tabiri reminded the medical professionals about the ethics of their profession and the need to adhere to ethical standards.

Prof. Tabiri nudged the medical professionals on the need to address surgical side infections.

Prof. Francis Atindana Abantanga, the keynote speaker, pointed out that it’s important for healthcare professionals to periodically change their surgical gloves and other equipment in order to completely eradicate infection instances before to, during, and following surgical procedures.

Prof. Abantanga advised medical professionals to make it a point to adhere to protocols when working on cases in the operating room in order to avoid patients having to stay for extended periods of time at the various clinics and hospitals.

Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the president’s advisor on health, urged administrators of healthcare facilities to efficiently regulate the usage of personal protective equipment (PPEs) to make sure that there is enough for all medical personnel.

“Doctors must make sure that the supplies must be stored well. This is what we can all do to make sure of the appropriateness, right time, and the right amount of its use. The Government will ensure that the PPEs are provided” he added.

Other partners at the meeting included the University for Development Studies, NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery and the University of Birmingham.

Other guests were Northern Regional Directors of Health, A.g. Director of Health Ghana Health Service, Clinical Care Ghana Health Service, Municipal Directors of Health Sagnarigu and Savelugu.
